Welcome to All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church |
| Since 1948, All Souls church has provided a liberal, religious alternative in the southern part of the Rio Grande Valley. Ours is an approach to worship and spirituality that is welcoming to people of many religious beliefs, cultural backgrounds, and gender orientations. |
"This church is dedicated to religion but not to a creed. Neither upon itself nor upon its members does it impose a test of doctrinal formulas. It aims at cultivating reverence for truth, moral character and helpfulness to humanity. It welcomes to its worship and fellowship all who are in sympathy with religion thus simple and thus free." --Marvin G. Palmerlee, ASUU Minister (1955)
As a small, lay led church, our members are engaged in every aspect of operation and governance. We have slowly begun to expand our circle of friends. We have collaborated with other UU Churches as well as local churches and organizations in social justice projects. We hosted a group of Buddhist pilgrims before their long walk along the U.S.-Mexico border and have since hosted a local sangha twice per month. We welcome everyone of all faiths, beliefs, races, classes and orientations who are seekers of enlightenment and fulfillment. In addition to our personal spiritual growth, our commitment also includes acting upon our principles which require us to become aware of and respond to the social injustices which plague and divide our community and humanity as a whole. To realize this we engage and collaborate in a variety of transformational activities with committed people of all faiths who share our vision and hope for a better world. We are striking a balance between refined and enhanced Sunday services and informal group discussions which have been the norm here for years now. We are in our second year of monthly screenings of First Friday Films that provide documentaries and feature films related to issues of social and environmental justice, as well as profoundly spiritual topics.
We are fully engaged in several ongoing collaborations with other UU congregations in our state and beyond, and are accessing resources and programs from the national Unitarian Universalist Association. Our connections with local organizations and other churches in our local area are deepening as we engage with them in a variety of social justice activities and programs thereby further increasing our positive image in the Brownsville community.
We are confident that with the support of our growing circle of friends our membership will increase. Given the need for liberal faith alternative in our city we strive to continue our stable presence and continued welcoming attitude to searchers of all faith backgrounds. We hope that you will visit us soon and forge a new and exciting path in your own journey. |
